Beyond Practice: What’s Next for Halal, Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism? - 22 August 2026

JAKARTA. Tourism practitioners, academics and policymakers from three continents will meet online this Saturday to answer a question the industry has so far been slow to ask. Not how halal, sustainable and inclusive tourism is done, but where it goes next.

The HaSIM Forum will host the dialogue on Saturday, 22 August 2026, from 15.00 to 16.00 Jakarta time. The session carries the title "Beyond Practice: What's Next for Halal, Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism?" It will be held live on Zoom and is open to the public at no cost. Every participant receives an e-certificate.

HaSIM Forum is a bi monthly international dialogue series on halal, sustainability and inclusive tourism. Its earlier editions focused on implementation. They examined how destinations, hotels and operators actually deliver on halal standards, environmental responsibility and accessibility. This edition moves past that. It asks which standards will define the coming decade, whether halal and sustainability agendas reinforce or compete with one another, and how the industry finally makes room for travellers it has long overlooked.

Three panelists will lead the discussion, each from a different corner of the sector.

Abdullah A. Basalamah is Area General Manager and Vice President of Rooms at Far East Hospitality Management in Singapore. He brings the view from inside a major hospitality group, where these principles either survive daily operations or quietly disappear from them.

Biubwa Omar is Managing Director of Safari Gateway Ltd. She also chairs the Zanzibar Women Chamber of Commerce and sits on the board of the Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce Tourism Cluster. Her perspective comes from a destination where tourism, local enterprise and community life are inseparable.

Dr. Supina Sapri Djalam, CHE, is an academic and researcher at the College of Tourism and Hospitality, University of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. She speaks from the research and education side, where the next generation of tourism professionals is being trained.

The dialogue will be hosted by the two co founders of HaSIM Forum. Assoc. Prof. Hera Oktadiana, Ph.D, CHE, also founded Muslim Women in Tourism & Hospitality. Elyn Hastriana, BBA, M.Par, founded the Center for Indonesian Tourism Studies.

The forum has built a recurring international audience across Southeast Asia, the United Kingdom, Africa and Australia. Organisers say the mix of practitioners and researchers in the room is what makes the conversation useful. Hotel operators hear what researchers are finding. Researchers hear what actually breaks in the field.
